John Daly beats up a fan!
John Daly beat up his biggest fan in Australia today…the camera. Having caught Daly doing all sorts of things in the past, it was about time it got the kicking it deserved, or so Daly thought as it captured him duffing another shot. The camera belonged to a another fan, Brad Clegg who luckily escaped a beating himself.
Daly’s opening round didn’t quite go to plan as he shot three double bogeys and four bogeys in a six over effort of 78. Mr Clegg stepped in to take a snap from close range and that blew the big guy’s top.
It’s not really a surprise though as the two-time major winner, 42 is about to miss his third straight cut in three Australian tournaments this season. He sliced it on the ninth straight into the trees, always good for a strop.
As Clegg went to take his picture Daly snatched his camera and chucked it at the tree, saying “you want it back, I’ll buy you a new one.” As Daly completed the hole Clegg was left to pick up the pieces of his smashed camera.
Clegg, asked if he would be seeking compensation from Daly, told reporters: “I don’t think I’ll be chasing him for the money. He’s a big bloke.” Clegg said he was pretty stunned by the incident and that he didn’t believe he had provoked the volatile American.
“It was very unexpected. I was bold but I wasn’t unreasonable,” he said. Daly will have to pull out all the stops if he wants avoid missing his 3rd cut in three weeks. He was paid appearance money to play on this year’s Australian circuit though with organisers believing he brings extra fans to the golf course to watch him play. Nice job if you can get it.
Daly spent a night in jail in October after police found him drunk outside a restaurant in North Carolina. Daly, the 1991 PGA Champion and 1995 British Open champion, has not held a US PGA Tour card for the past two years.
All that aside though, I don’t think it’s unreasonable. You shouldn’t take photos at a golf course anyway. They banned people from even taking mobile phone cameras to this year’s open.
Anyway, if it makes him feel better then why not, he obviously needs some stress therapy.
